When you volunteer as part of your vacation, your trip takes on a whole new meaning. Voluntourism is a unique opportunity to contribute to the place you’re visiting while learning about and creating an individual connection with its inhabitants and environment – that’s why we call voluntourists "Change Ambassadors." This page is a chance for all Change Ambassadors to write about your experience and tell fellow travelers about the kind of impact voluntourism can have and what you learned along the way. Thank you for taking the time to share your story!
Dressed as ghouls, rock stars, and Disney Princesses, volunteers traversed the streets in Walla Walla, trick-or-treating for supplies benefiting the area's homeless shelter. The event, sponsored by the Walla Walla AmeriCorps Team, has become an annual event involving the community. Fifty participating businesses contributed to the supplies that have served over 200 homeless individuals in the months of October/November. Homelessness rates are continuing to amplify in the Walla Walla area, especially due to the current economic crisis. Men and women who are unaccustomed to these hardships are suddenly penniless and on the street, contributing to a rise in displaced families and individuals. The work at the Christian Aid Center provides a roof over the heads of the homeless and the staff encourages residents to seek jobs and empower them with hope. "We are so thankful for this gift, and many will be thankful for the contribution these volunteers have made" stated Jason Wicklund after receiving the supplies gathered by the Make a Difference Day volunteers. The Walla Walla AmeriCorps Team has been delighted to impact the community in such a powerful method and has found true joy in the gift of service. This project is welcomed by community, contributors and volunteers alike, and we celebrate this chance to Make a Difference.
