When you volunteer as part of your vacation, your trip takes on a whole new meaning. Voluntourism is a unique opportunity to contribute to the place you’re visiting while learning about and creating an individual connection with its inhabitants and environment – that’s why we call voluntourists "Change Ambassadors." This page is a chance for all Change Ambassadors to write about your experience and tell fellow travelers about the kind of impact voluntourism can have and what you learned along the way. Thank you for taking the time to share your story!
As healthcare and hospice workers we all know how a nice environment helps the patient feel better. We talked to one of the administrators of one of the nursing homes in our town and asked what we could do to help spruce up the place for the residents for make a difference day. The administrator said, "Nothing makes things seem brighter and newer than a new coat of paint." So on a Saturday morning, our staff met at the nursing home, wolfed down some donuts, and started to paint. It was amazing how all the residents came to watch us and thank us. They joked with us, wanted us to come see their rooms, one lady in a wheel chair, said she would just stay seated and supervise us. We all enjoyed the day and plan to do it again.
